Port of Sevilla

As a result of the major changes that have affected the Spanish port system, and hence the Port of Seville, which have been brought about by the legal modifications made in 1992, the Spanish ports embarked upon a strategy that, to a greater or lesser extent, began to incorporate into their strategy – basically of a business nature –, activities that tended to help them to harmonise with their environment. In fact, 1992 was the year in which Seville, prompted by the universal exhibition held to commemorate 500 years since the American continents were discovered, finally opened up to its river, the Guadalquivir, removing the physical obstructions that concealed it from the city and giving the river the place it quite
rightly deserved as the city’s most significant and characteristic feature.

Seville is a port city steeped in many centuries of history, where the port has played a vital role in its development and has been closely linked to its destiny. During the course of these changes the physical layout has been modified to adapt to navigation requirements, which has led to the port activity moving further south, leaving behind the old quays and docks in the most central part of the city that were opened up to it, all of which meant that the port activity and the harbour zone ceased to be visible from the City of Seville itself.

The consequence of these changes was that the port became emotionally distant from its environment, although this was not so much a real distancing because the economic and social influence of the port has always been felt.

However, this did mean that the inhabitants were no longer aware of what was involved in the port activities themselves, which had the characteristics of a river port, and this situation has been further accentuated by the fact that access to the operating areas is now completely restricted for security reasons.
The same state of affairs now also applies to the extensive sphere of influence of the port, the coastal towns of Chipiona and Sanlucar and all those who live along the banks of the River Guadalquivir as far as Seville.
